Surprise farewell to the largest torrent search engine Torrentz!

Finland based meta search engine for Torrents, Torrentz brought a major shock to its fans when suddenly it stopped responding to the search request and read “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell”. Founded back in 2003,  by Flippy, the portal let its fan find torrent downloads in the easiest manner.

Torrentz.eu was used to index torrents from other popular torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents, ExtraTorrent, etc. It differed from these other torrent sites in away that it did not host any torrent files itself. Instead, it acts as a “meta-search engine,” searching other search engines for whatever the user is looking for.

Anyone who goes to Torrentz’ website now, it has a banner along the bottom informing visitors that reads “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.” There have been a number instances where the exisence of such websites including Torrentz itself, leading to copright infringements, have ben challenged. Earlier in In 2013 , Paramount Pictures sent a DMCA claim to Google to remove Torrentz homepage and two other pages from the search engine, but Torrentz counter claimed on this request saying the links do not infringe any copyright policy.

The shut down of Torrentz, is just the few weeks after one of the largest torrents site Kickass Torrents was shut down following the arrest of alleged founder Artem Vaulin in Poland.  Artem Vaulin is the alleged 30-year-old Ukrainian owner of Kickass Torrents, who was detained in Poland after being charged with a four-count US criminal indictment which was followed by shutdown of the search engine Kickass Torrents. Vaulin was charged with money laundering and violations of several copyright laws.

It shall be of no surprise, if we see a lot of other Torrents website shutting their operations, to prevent themselves from the legal battles under the allegations of illegal distribution of digital contents. Internet being free domain and as such, no matter to what extent authorities try and police it, it will always be challenge to bring about a state of control.
